Moving Home Checklist: A Timeline for your move

Download our moving home checklist.

Moving home is undoubtedly a stressful process but at Enact, we are here to help provide support and guidance to make the process as easy and efficient as possible. Before starting this checklist, remember that your proposed move date is only legally binding following exchange of contracts. The following information is a step-by-step guide to help you through each stage of your move.

8 Weeks before – Start planning
  • The sooner you start planning your move, the better; it might seem obvious, but early planning will help reduce stress down the line.
  • Create a file where you can put all move-related notes and official paperwork.
  • Start researching removal companies to see which suits you best; by starting now, you are giving yourself ample time to scout out the best deal.
  • Make sure your new home insurance policy covers you from the day you move in.

6 weeks before – Start packing

  • Buy packing materials e.g. boxes, bubble wrap, etc.
  • Start decluttering your home by discarding all those items you have never used. Be firm in your decision-making as there is no point in spending time or money moving items you will never use.
  • Pack all the non-essential items away into boxes and remember to label all boxes!

4 weeks before – The notifying process

  •  If you are moving out of a rental property, you must notify your Landlord in writing.
  • Notify all relevant utility companies; start the process of closing services for your current house and set up services at your new home.
  • Change your address online with Royal Mail. Also, be sure to update your bank or building society.

3 weeks before – The finishing touches

  • Once exchange of contracts has occurred, thanks to your research, you will be ready to book a removal company. Be sure to confirm the date, time and the details of your move, including any access restrictions at either property.
  • Optimise your food situation; the aim of the game is to have absolutely no food left in the freezer when you move. The same applies to any open packets in your cupboards; try to eat up, dieting before your move is not advised!
  • The last thing you need on moving day is a vehicle breakdown. We advise that you get your car serviced, especially if you are travelling long distance.

2 weeks before – Finish packing

  • The time has come to pack almost everything that is left in your home. Once again, be sure to label everything clearly.

1 week before – Reconfirm

  • Reconfirm the details of your move with the removal firm. At this stage of the move, it is vital that you double-check everything.
  • Pack an essential survival kit; fill it with items you will need straight away when you arrive in your new home. Make sure this stays with you and do not leave it with the removal team!

Day before – Almost there

  • Make sure you keep all-important documents to hand.
  • Clear & defrost – by now you have should have eaten every crumb in the house! However, if you haven’t, make sure you clean out your fridge, freezer, and cupboards.

Moving Day – Sweeping Goodbye

  • Say goodbye to your house by performing one last final check of the property to ensure nothing has been left.
  • Make sure you have completed everything on your moving home checklist!
